On Sunday, April 21st at 3:00pm PST we will begin the process of upgrading your mail services. If you do not use our mail services please disregard this email (e.g. you host your own mail server or use Gmail). The process will require some minor downtime and some small changes for you on Monday morning.

PLEASE MAKE THE FOLLOWING CHANGES TO YOUR EMAIL ON MONDAY APRIL 22ND.

On Monday morning please update all devices that connect to email to use the following new incoming and outgoing mail server settings for the domains using mail here.

Incoming Mail Server: mail.ephost.com
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.ephost.com

The new service will feature substantially higher disk space limits, a new web mail interface, new mail synchronization options (e.g. Microsoft ActiveSynch, CalDav, CardDav, and Exchange Web Services) and SSL encrypted email.

Additionally, we have recently completed integrating our control panel system into your website. Using the username and password we sent you initially you can now login to your account and then to the control panel system. Note your email accounts will not be displayed in the control panel until Monday April 22nd.

]]> <![CDATA[Outlook 2013 (PC) and Outlook 2011 (Mac) Synchronization Options]]> This latest release of our mail server software now includes synchronization (mail, contacts and calendars) between our web mail service, your mobile devices, and now the desktop version of Outlook 2013 (PC) and/or Outlook 2011 (Mac) - for complete end-to-end synchronization between them. Microsoft Active Synch is available for $2.00 per email address per month and supports multiple devices. Exchange Web Services for Outlook 2011 (Mac) is free. Additionally, Windows 2008's default mail client is also supported. EWA and EAS work over ports 80/443 so you don't have to mess around with SMTP servers regardless of the network you are using. This simplifies setup for people on the go. You can look forward to additional options that are either partially supported or expected early next year such as viewing the availability of other users and conference room scheduling on connected devices. When compared to the cost of MS Exchange it's an easy decision.

]]> <![CDATA[Introducing Railo v4]]> We are proud to announce that our newest shared server supports Railo v4 instead of Adobe ColdFusion. Railo is a mature and speedy CFML engine which cleanly replaces the Adobe product. The latest release leaves only a handful of unsupported tags for which most developers have simply replaced with jQuery anyway. We would otherwise convert all of our servers to it if we didn't host such a large amount of legacy Adobe ColdFusion applications which may still use these old tags. One of the many unique aspects of Railo is the Railo Administrator. Each domain using Railo has it's own administrator so that you can administer DSNs, Mappings, and other application level settings such as mail, sessions and ORM. We are so pleased with Railo, it's ease of updating, and the fact it's community driven. Spend your money on yourself rather than licensing as they say. ]]> <![CDATA[Adobe ColdFusion Upgrade]]> We are currently in the process of upgrading Adobe ColdFusion on our existing shared servers. We had planned to upgrade much earlier following the big migration earlier this year. We are currently undecided if we plan to migrate to CF 9 or CF 10 due to the large amount of legacy Adobe ColdFusion applications we are hosting for customers. In either case we'll upgrade in January. This will be out final upgrade of Adobe ColdFusion on our servers as we plan to begin using Railo ColdFusion v4, a mature and speedy open-source option, for all future servers. ]]> <![CDATA[Premium MX Servers]]> We have two private MX servers available for users who are running their own email (e.g. MS Exchange or Gmail) and need anti-spam, anti-virus and back-up email capabilities. Our servers can accept and scan your email then redirect to your email server. In the event youre email server is down the messages will be spooled on our primary and secondary servers until your email server is backup. The cost for most customers is $24.95 per domain per month which is outstanding when compared to Postini @ $5.00 per address.

]]> <![CDATA[EP2 Network Planned Updates]]> In Q1 of 2013 we will be performing several needed updates to our EP2 Network (former Mallsoft Network). This includes adding a new high-capacity mail server, adding a control panel system, and updating DNS to switch out the "Instahost" domain with "EPhost". We will also be consolidating several shared systems, adding a deeper level of integration with the EP1 Network and upgrading most systems to either Microsoft Windows 2008 R2, and Microsoft SQL Server 2012. This year we started and completed a re-vamp of the entire backup system, imported DNS zones to our normal name servers and added the control panel to several new clients.

Finally! The EPhost webmail system is now touch capable affording access on most all mobile devices including the iPad and iPhone. You can now fully read and respond to emails using webmail on most any mobile device. This be helpful when traveling or checking your email on someone else's device.



Improved Synchronization with Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail

SmarterMail 9.x includes support for Exchange Web Services, a newer data synchronization protocol that will eventually replace the outdated MAPI protocol, as Exchange Web Services allows for faster communication between an email client and the mail server. Available as an optional add-on at the server level, Exchange Web Services seamlessly syncs SmarterMail messages, contacts, calendars and tasks to third-party email clients like Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac, Microsoft Outlook 2012 for Windows and Apple Mail on Snow Leopard and Lion.

Complex Password Reminder and Information

We have recently seen a string of FTP and email accounts that have been compromised due to the use of weak passwords (e.g. "Password" or "joe123"). This often leads to your website getting hacked, possibly affecting other users, or your email account being used to send 1000's of spam messages. This may result in fines, temporary suspension or termination of your account per or Terms of Service.

We have recently updated the password policy on many of our service to require the use of 1 UPPERCASE letter and 1 NUMBER. This does not affect current user passwords but we do suggest updating the next time you rotate your password. Please consider the new requirements when creating a password at EPhost.



Firewall Rule Update

In a couple of weeks or less we will be announcing an update to our firewall RULES. This will be made to limit the overall scope of the PORTS we have open to particular servers, and attempt to obfuscate services by disabling common features like PING. We will be implementing individual firewall rules for each server in the network. Dedicated, Virtual and Cloud server customers will have an opportunity to accept our default rules, or establish custom permit and deny rules to whitelist particular IP addresses. These changes are being made to improve overall security for your account.

]]> <![CDATA[pcAnywhere software security vulnerability risk discovered]]>
This issue does not affect normal shared web hosting customers, but rather dedicated or cloud server customers who may be using pcAnywhere. Most EPhost dedicated or cloud server customers use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) for remote PC access instead of pcAnywhere. None-the-less, we felt it was prudent to post this important news just in case you are using PCAnywhere on your server.

"At this time, Symantec recommends disabling pcAnywhere until Symantec releases a final set of software updates that resolve currently known vulnerability risks," Symantec said in the advisory.

Symantec found that the code came from 2006 versions of Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition, Norton Internet Security, Norton SystemWorks and pcAnywhere. Only the latter software contained vulnerabilities exposed as a result of the theft.

If your dedicated server has pcAnywhere installed and you are currently using it to manage the server, then you will need to remove or disable the software until further updates can fix the vulnerability.

This move was made to ensure the best quality routing and networking for our valued customers. No changes have been made to IP’s on our EP2 Network (formerly Mallsoft).

New IP Sets:

We have moved the entire 71.6.174.X and 71.6.175.X networks to the new IP set on a 1:1 basis.

71.6.174.X = 64.87.22.X
71.6.175.X = 64.87.23.X

For example, if your IP address is 71.6.174.100 then it will now be 64.87.22.100. If your IP address is 71.6.175.44 it will now be 64.87.23.44.
