|
How do you track bandwidth usage? What billing method do you use? |
| Bandwidth is calculated on the Actual Transfer method. We calculate the amount of traffic (incoming/outgoing) your server generates from services like FTP and HTTP. Certain server to server transactions are excluded. e.g. SQL Server Transactions that reside within our network. |

How do you track bandwidth usage? What billing method do you use? |
| If you have the Synergy Colocation plan we use the Actual Method (see above under Dedicated Servers). Otherwise, we use the 95th percentile Method of billing. This means that we poll your traffic at 5 minute intervalds. The highest top 5% of bandwidth is removed and not calculated in your bill. It is a fair method that takes both transfer and speed/available bandwidth into consideration. Bandwith is tracked and graphed using the Muti Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG). You will have access to your monthly, weekly and daily traffic reports. |

Is it hard to manage a server remotely? |
| No, you will really be surprised. Through the use of software such as Terminal Services (Included in Windows 2000/2003 Server) or PC Anywhere you will have desktop control of your server- just like what you see on your desktop computer. You may also want to consider the use of an integraded management board (hardware). These boards provide an additional NIC and an always-on "mini-server" inside your server. This type of setup will alow you to access your server whether it's on or off and can usually provide you with control just as if you were connected directly to the server. Managing a server is not any different than managing your desktop computer- you just do it more often. In fact, since most servers contain substantially less software than your local desktop computer it's often less cluttered and runs more smoothly. |
|
What types of servers/hardware can you colocate? |
| We highly suggest colocating 1-2U rackmount servers. However, you are welcome to colocate any style of server or related hardware (firewall). You will need to purchase the appropriate amount of rack space. For instance, a medium "tower" style server may cost a bit less upfront to buy but could cost as much as 8x more to colocate due to it's size and footprint. In the same space, you could colocate 8 rackmount servers or 2 "tower" size servers. |
